Dance-Off Campaign to Raise Awareness and Funds for Global Access to Primary Education
New York, NY, January 16, 2014 – Today, The Global Poverty Project announced its newest digital campaign, Get Down, a six-week energetic and interactive online dance competition that aims to raise awareness for the 57 million children around the world who live without access to primary education. The campaign asks participants to create a short, 15-30 second ‘dance-off’ video and upload it to GetDownDanceOff.org, where participants can share their video via social networks, receive votes from the community, and fundraise to support education programs across the world. Get Down will take place in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
In its first year, the campaign will raise critical funds to support the work of the Cotton On Foundation, whose programs provide education to children in Southern Uganda. Funds raised from Get Down will help build schools, give scholarships to children who would not otherwise have access to an education, pay for new teacher programs, and more.
Starting today, people everywhere can upload a short dance video and challenge their friends to a dance-off. Dancers get sponsored for each vote or view their video receives, and participants are encouraged to fundraise money in support of the Cotton On Foundation.
The New York Jets Flight Crew cheerleading squad has voiced their support of the campaign, dancing-off and challenging other NFL cheerleading squads to Get Down. The squad’s video is featured on the Get Down platform, where they are driving donations in support of universal access to primary education.
“Everyone in the world can dance, but not everyone in the world has access to a basic education,” said Ross de la Haye, Programs Manager at The Global Poverty Project. “Get Down allows everyone to express themselves creatively through dance to help create support for vital education projects.”
Throughout the campaign, participants will have the chance to win prizes including two audience tickets for Season 11 of “So You Think You Can Dance,” and tickets to incredible concerts such as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, One Direction, Kings of Leon and Chvrches. All participants will be awarded Global Citizen points, which can be redeemed for tickets to incredible concerts through the Global Citizen Tickets Initiative following the campaign.
