Press Release – Livonia, MI – September 26, 2018 — It’s that time of year again. September is here and children are stocking up on pencils, notebooks, scissors, and glue to prepare for the new school year. But the most important tool for academic success can’t be bought at a store. In fact, it’s free!
Kids need more than books and supplies to excel in school. They need a healthy, consistent bedtime and a sleep schedule that gives them the appropriate hours of shut-eye based on their age. Preschoolers need 11-13 hours of sleep, elementary school kids require 10-12 hours every night, and middle and high school students should aim for between 8 and 9 hours of sleep.
At Sweet Dreamzzz, Inc., we teach the children who receive our sleep education programs that a good night’s sleep starts with a good, consistent bedtime routine. Studies show that light stimulation, whether it’s from a phone screen, television, computer, or tablet, can disrupt normal sleep cycles. Sleep professionals agree that electronics should be removed from the bedroom or shut off at least an hour before bedtime. The Sweet Dreamzzz R.E.A.D.Y.™ bedtime routine, taught to every student who receives our sleep education, embodies relaxing before bed by reading, journaling, coloring, or taking a warm bath.
Additionally, the R.E.A.D.Y. program curriculum emphasizes the importance of eating a healthy snack before bed. Health professionals warn that a heavy meal too close to bedtime can negatively impact sleep and say that it’s best to stick with a light snack such as an apple, crackers, cheese, or yogurt.
Sleep, the most coveted school supply, is a tool to success that students need every single night. Be sure to make proper sleep a part of your kids’ back to school plan and set a goal to keep it consistent year-round.
