New York, New York – December 16th, 2014 – Steven Alan and Edible Schoolyard NYC, a nonprofit organization that partners with public schools in underserved areas of NYC to build organic gardens and kitchen classrooms, team up on a fundraising campaign in an effort to support ESYNYC this holiday season.
Through the end of 2014, Steven Alan stores will highlight the spirit of the paper crane by filling their store window displays across the nation with cranes folded by the public. Steven Alan stores will be supporting ESNYC by offering store customers the option to donate proceeds at checkout by folding a paper crane.
According to Japanese tradition, anyone with the patience and commitment to fold 1,000 paper cranes will be granted their most desired wish. Two year-old Sadako Sasaki furthered the meaning of the paper crane with her own attempt to fold 1,000 while sick with leukemia from radiation exposure from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. From her hospital bed, she attempted to fold 1,000 in a prayer for peace. Her story stands as an inspiration to us all, and a testament to the continued power of the paper crane as a sincere symbol for hope, love, honor, and peace.
Kate Brashares, Executive Director of Edible Schoolyard NYC says of the partnership, “Steven Alan himself has been a supporter and admirer of Edible Schoolyard NYC’s work and was the force behind this partnership. We are thrilled to be a part of their thoughtful, beautiful support of our mission.”
For the month of December 2014, the paper crane holiday window displays can be found at the following Steven Alan store locations: Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; New York (Brooklyn, Chelsea, East Hampton, NoLita, and TriBeCa); Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; Connecticut (Greenwich and Westport).
