SDSU Spring Welcome Back

There are celebrations, new facilities, programs and faculty on campus this spring.

SAN DIEGO (January 20, 2015) — San Diego State University will welcome back Aztecs when school begins on Jan. 21.

Look for celebrations as well as new facilities, programs and faculty on campus this spring:

The union’s first birthday: This semester marks one year since the opening of the 206,000 square-foot “campus living room.” On Monday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union courtyard will feature music and treats for a special first birthday celebration. Associated Students will also welcome the SDSU community back to campus with activities set for Jan. 23-31 at or near the union. The fun ranges from a Barn Yard Bash, complete with carnival games and a mechanical bull, to a dance party and a photo booth with SDSU’s men’s basketball team.

Aztecs Shops Terrace open: The new $4 million, 4,537-square-foot facility features sheer glass on three sides and houses a Starbucks, an Aztec Market and indoor and outdoor seating. The new Starbucks replaces its former location in West Commons; which has been renovated to provide additional seating. The market has traditional convenience store offerings, but also makes sandwiches, salads and other items to order.

Leadership minor returns: Open to all SDSU undergraduate students, the minor in Leadership explores a variety of leadership theories and encourages critical thinking skills related to the analysis of leadership styles and practices. The minor, which is collaborative and interdisciplinary, is being offered again this spring. Faculty interested in having their course approved as an elective for the minor should contact Nancy Farnan; students interested in the minor should contact Robyn Adams.

Summer Internship Program: Career Services’ Summer Internship Program features a series of workshops and other preparatory activities designed to prepare students to secure and be successful during an internship. Highlights for the program this spring include an Internship Boot Camp scheduled for Feb. 7. New faculty this spring: Eight new faculty members will join the Aztec family this fall. Five new faculty members will join the College of Sciences, including Gregory Holland (chemistry and biochemistry), Jillian Maloney (geological sciences), Antoni Luque Santolaria (mathematics and statistics), and Marina Kalyuzhnaya and Donatella Zona (biology).

Parking and Traffic: During the first few days of classes, peak traffic congestion hours are 7:30 to 10 a.m. Those who arrive after 10 a.m. should consider Parking Structures 3 and 6 on the east side of campus, which are typically the last to fill. The W Lot near the Storm and Nasatir Hall Building Complex and the H Lot near Zura Hall will be closed. College Avenue at Lindo Paseo will be closed for the South Campus Plaza project. Parking Services has more tips for parking and traffic during the first few days of classes.

SDSU Bookstore deals and discounts: SDSU Bookstore will continue offering its Price Match Pledge to students — the store will match textbook prices from KB Books, Amazon.com, and BarnesandNoble.com. An aztecnology sale at the SDSU Bookstore for students, faculty and staff will take place Jan. 19 to Jan. 30. Deals include $50 off desktops and laptops, $20 off tablets and 20 percent off accessories with hardware purchase.
