Press Release – Palo Alto, CA: ReSurge International, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization providing safe, affordable life-changing reconstructive surgical care to more than 2,500 children and adults annually in developing countries, is hosting their annual Transformations Gala on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco, CA. The Gala will bring together leaders in the global health community, ReSurge medical volunteers, partners and supporters.
The event will recognize a number of individuals and organizations that have helped ReSurge achieve their goals of enhancing the skills of reconstructive surgeons and their teams, increasing access to surgical care for the poor by educating early-career reconstructive surgeons, and transforming patients’ lives by restoring function through reconstructive plastic surgery.
Thomas Davenport, MD, FACS, board-certified plastic surgeon and partner at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, will be honored with the Donald R. Laub Humanitarian Award for volunteering his time and talent to ReSurge for more than 15 years. Dr. Davenport has performed reconstructive surgery and trained others in reconstructive plastic surgery on more than 20 ReSurge trips. He has visited countries including Bhutan, Brazil, Cambodia, Ecuador, India, Mali, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Peru, and the Philippines. He is a partner at the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group and director of microsurgery, director of surgical wound care and chief of plastic surgery at NYU Winthrop Hospital.
“I am honored and humbled to receive this award from ReSurge,” said Dr. Davenport. “It has been one of the great privileges of my life to be a part of such a talented and generous team that’s bringing life-changing surgeries to individuals in need all over the world.”
Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, will receive this year’s Partners in Progress award. The award is in recognition of Dentons’ steadfast support of ReSurge’s global efforts to bring safe, affordable surgery to those that need it most around the world. Wendell Alderson, R.N., will be honored as the recipient of the Barco’s Nightingales Foundation’s Award for Nursing Excellence. This award honors nurses who not only have contributed to their profession, but who are committed to humanitarian work as volunteers donating their time and professional skills to those in need.
Alderson has a long history of volunteering with ReSurge, making at least one trip annually as an invaluable member of a surgical team. He serves on both the ReSurge Nursing Committee and the Medical Services Committee. In addition to his annual surgical team trip, Wendell was also drafted as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to assess medical practices and procedures at several sites.
Guests will also be able to meet the participants of the “Pioneering Women in Reconstructive Surgery” program, from Bangladesh, Ecuador, Mozambique, Nepal and Zimbabwe. This program is a joint initiative of ReSurge and Skinceuticals, developed to deliver technical training, professional mentorship, and leadership development to first-generation female surgeons to increase access to reconstructive surgical care in under-served parts of the world.
ReSurge would like to thank the Presenting Sponsor, the Lee Family Foundation, as well as Gala Chairs Eileen Sheldon and Maiya Shaw. A full list of sponsors can be found here.
