Projects Abroad launches international volunteer projects to bring clean, reliable water to Maasai communities in rural Tanzania in 2014
NEW YORK – January 9, 2014 – Following the success of several Water & Sanitation Projects worldwide, Projects Abroad and partner BridgIT Water are launching new projects in Tanzania this month, where they will continue their international development work to provide safe and sustainable water sources to communities abroad.
Two new projects will take place in Tanzania from January to March 2014. Together, these projects will give easier access to water to thousands of Maasai, members of one of the most iconic tribes in Africa. Because of droughts and other difficulties, many Maasai have been forced to give up their nomadic lifestyles and settle in small communities all over Africa, creating a resources strain as they struggle to adapt to new ways of living.
The Ngorongoro Eseere Water Project will be located in a small Maasai community based in Ngorongoro National Park, 3 hours outside Arusha. Volunteers will build a solar-pump installation that will provide water for over 500 school children, their teachers, and the community health clinic. Providing a clean and reliable source of water for the school will help make the entire community healthier, safer, and more self-sufficient.
The Merelani Tanzanite Water Project will take place in the hills 1.5 hours outside Arusha. Volunteers will transfer water from an existing bore installation into a 100 liter tank, in order to optimize the use of a gravity-fed water source. The work will allow the water to reach a greater number of communities at the bottom of the hills.
Both Projects are a collaboration between Projects Abroad and BridgIT, who have successfully teamed up in the past to help bring clean and reliable water sources to communities in Jamaica, Bolivia and Tanzania.

Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor, as a program for students to travel and work while on break from full-time study.
