Local Long Valley Youth Awarded $10,000 Scholarship from Kohl’s Department Stores for Extraordinary Volunteer Efforts

Zachary Rice was chosen from more than 37,000 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program nominees for outstanding community service

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., July 30, 2014Kohl’s Department Stores (NYSE: KSS) announced today that Zachary Rice from Long Valley is one of 10 national Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program winners each receiving a total of $10,000 in scholarships for higher education. In addition to recognizing Zachary for outstanding efforts through volunteerism, Kohl’s will also donate $1,000 the nonprofit organization of Zachary’s choice.

“Kohl’s is thrilled to recognize Zachary Rice as one of ten national winners of the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program, and we applaud him for the time, energy and passion he has devoted to helping others and making a difference,” said Bevin Bailis, Kohl’s senior vice president, communications and public relations. “Kohl’s is pleased to acknowledge the inspiring work that Zachary and the other national winners are doing in their communities every day.”

Hospitalized with a painful hip infection for several weeks, Zachary, 11, found minor relief while playing the hospital’s video gaming system. The pleasant distraction inspired Zachary to get more systems for the local hospital so every child could have one to play. Zachary started The Action For Distraction 5K Family Fun Run/Walk & Kids Action Marathon, an event in which more than 300 participants raised $18,500 last year to provide the hospital with enough money to purchase 34 new electronic devices for every room on the children’s floor. The success of Action For Distraction motivated Zachary to make the walk/run an annual event. Proceeds go towards buying new electronics at the local hospital so even more children can have a comforting distraction during their stay.

Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has recognized more than 22,000 kids, including the 2014 winners, with more than $4.3 million in scholarships and prizes. This year, Kohl’s recognized more than 2,300 young volunteers with nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes.
