Lifeway to Provide Additional $20,000 Donation to the World Food Programme – Charity Miles App Tracks Run and Walk Distances to Raise Funds for Charitable Organizations
NEW YORK, Nov. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Charity Miles, LLC is pleased to announce that Lifeway Foods, Inc., (NASDAQ:LWAY), a leading supplier of kefir cultured dairy products, today announced its sponsorship of the Charity Miles app in support of the victims of the recent Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines. Charity Miles is an award winning iPhone/Android app that enables people to earn corporate sponsorships for charity while walking, running or biking.
Lifeway is sponsoring Charity Miles user’s donations to various charities for five weeks, with the campaign running fromNovember 12th to December 17th. With ‘Giving Tuesday,’ the holiday held December 3rd to encourage the support of charitable organizations, falling during the overindulgent holiday eating season, Lifeway hopes the sponsorship will inspire healthy living as part of the charity participation.
In addition to sponsoring Charity Miles generally, Lifeway is also providing an additional $20,000 matching incentive to the World Food Programme, the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, through Charity Miles. Therefore, whenever someone uses Charity Miles for any charity during the campaign, Lifeway will donate an additional 25¢ per mile through Charity Miles in support of the World Food Programme’s Haiyan relief efforts.
Typhoon Haiyan holds the unofficial mark for the strongest ever recorded cyclone to make landfall and has caused several thousands of deaths and affected millions of others. The United Nations World Food Programme is mobilizing food and logistics supplies and communications equipment to assist the government-led emergency response to Typhoon Haiyan.
“Typhoon Haiyan is a major disaster that compelled us to take immediate action to support Charity Miles and the United Nations World Food Programme,” said Lifeway President and CEO Julie Smolyansky, who is also a member of the United Nations Global Entrepreneurs Council. “The World Food Programme is tackling the massive logistical problems caused by the storm, as much of the transportation infrastructure was damaged and many supplies will need to be airlifted. The aftermath of the storm is shocking, and we knew we had to contribute to help provide desperately needed food and equipment supplies to the region.”
“People have lost their homes and livelihoods, and the damage to infrastructure is substantial. Our thoughts are with the families affected by this terrible storm, and the United Nations World Food Programme is ready to assist in any way it can,” said WFP Representative and Country Director Praveen Agrawal.
To participate in the Lifeway Foods fundraiser, download the Charity Miles app in the iTunes App Store or Google Play and log every run, walk or bike in the app. Join others supporting the Philippines by using hashtag #GivingTuesday.
In the spring of 2013, Lifeway and Charity Miles worked together to support The One Fund Boston fundraising initiative benefiting victims of the Boston Marathon bombing tragedy.
