Kool Smiles Partners with Touch A Life to Deliver Free Dental Care in Ghana

Press Release – ATLANTA — As part of its Kool Doctors Giving Back global outreach initiative, Kool Smiles will partner with Touch A Life to deliver dental care to children and families in Ghana September 8-14, 2018.

Three Kool Smiles dentists, a clinical team leader, and a dental hygienist will join a team of medical volunteers traveling to the Accra and Kumasi regions of Ghana where they will spend several days performing restorative dental work and educating children and adults about the importance of oral hygiene.

The Kool Smiles dental team includes:

  • Associate Doctor Abrefi-Kete Asare, DDS from Laredo, Texas;
  • Associate Doctor Tashiba Nelson, DDS from Orangeburg, South Carolina;
  • Associate Doctor Tsebaot Idrias, DDS from Baltimore, Maryland;
  • Clinical Team Leader Teri Brown from Louisville, Kentucky; and
  • Dental Hygienist Amy Le from Atlanta, Georgia.

The Kool Smiles dental team will conduct dental examinations, extractions, restorative procedures, and cleanings during their time in Ghana. They will also provide families with dental education and health kits.

“At Kool Smiles, we believe everyone should have access to quality, affordable dental care, regardless of where they live,” said Dr. Dale Mayfield, Chief Dental Officer for Kool Smiles. “We’re proud to be sending such an excellent team of doctors and staff on this trip. They truly exemplify the Kool Smiles mission, both in their service to their own communities, and their eagerness to help families abroad.”

Touch A Life is an organization that develops creative ways to bring healing and empowerment to those who are suffering, exploited or at-risk around the world. Specifically, Touch A Life provides long-term rehabilitative care for child survivors of forced labor in Ghana. Their programs include the Touch A Life Care Center, which is the only long-term rehabilitative facility for formerly trafficked children in the region, and Life Academy, which is a program for young adults seeking to obtain life skills and vocational training.

“We are excited to have Kool Smiles as a partner to help carry out our mission of bringing aid to those who might be suffering or are in need of dental care,” said Rachel Brown, Development Director at Touch A Life. “When children lack access to dental care, it impacts their quality of life and can cause suffering leading to an inability to eat, sleep, learn and play. This dental service trip is a positive step toward empowering a healthier, happier future for the children the children Touch A Life serves.”

Launched in 2016, the Kool Doctors Giving Back initiative aims to bring, quality, compassionate dental care to underserved communities at home and abroad. The Kool Doctors Giving Back program is sponsored by the Benevis Foundation.
