Projects Abroad Offers Fall Internships for Students, Graduates, and Professionals Interested in Human Rights and Social Work

NEW YORK – July 23, 2014 – Earlier this year, the #BringBackOurGirls campaign brought social and human rights issues – especially the plight of young girls and women in Africa – into sharp focus across the world. More people are increasingly aware of the need for awareness regarding these issues and the need for a greater number of people to get involved and actively make a difference. This fall, international volunteer organization Projects Abroad offers volunteers the opportunity to intern abroad and help communities affected by human rights abuses and social injustices.
Students, graduates, and experienced professionals with a passion for affecting change in marginalized communities can get involved at a grassroots level, dealing with issues such as women’s rights, domestic violence, child labor, human trafficking, police accountability, and worker’s rights, among others. Our aim is to educate and empower, and our volunteers actively work toward that goal alongside local professionals. It is an ideal opportunity to gain meaningful research and communication skills and learn more about human rights practices in developing countries while giving back.

For the interns, this kind of experience is irreplaceable, and improving their research, communication, and management skills abroad also helps them stand out from the crowd when it comes to applying for jobs.”

Child Rights Initiative in Jamaica
This project is ideal for students and graduates looking to gain experience in the area of social work. It focuses on addressing the social needs of Jamaican children in the following areas: Participation Rights, Survival Rights, Developmental Rights, and Protection Rights. Depending on how much time you commit to the project, you can gain experience in more than one area. Volunteers could find themselves assisting local social workers with investigative field work, counseling, case management, planning and running workshops and seminars, conducting psychological and educational assessments, and more.

Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor, as a program for students to travel and work while on break from full-time study. The program had its genesis in post-USSR Romania, where students were given the chance to teach conversational English. After a few years just sending volunteers to Eastern Europe for teaching, the company expanded to sending volunteers of all ages around the world on a wide range of projects.
