New York, NY – HealthCorps® (www.healthcorps.org), a national non-profit co-founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa to combat the childhood obesity crisis, is proud to announce its Highway to Health Festival 2014, a free community health fair on May 18th at the South Street Seaport taking place from 10am-4pm.
Included among the festival’s healthy lifestyle family activities are performances by musical group Monarchy; the UXF Fitness Competition, sponsored by the New York Sports Clubs; free health screenings; healthy food and beverage samples; and fitness demonstrations. HealthCorps will also feature the Music for a Better America Talent Competition, sponsored by Amerigroup, which will include performances from HealthCorps high school students; as well as a Teen Battle Chef Competition between four teams comprised of HealthCorps students. Toufayan Bakery is a featured exhibitor, who has supported our 2014 festivals nationwide.
HealthCorps Highway to Health festivals are held in HealthCorps communities across the nation. Each festival showcases neighborhood health resources typically located in and around HealthCorps high schools. By organizing these community festivals, HealthCorps promotes awareness of a healthy lifestyle’s benefits, especially nutrition, physical fitness and mental resiliency. Empowering students to become educated consumers and health activists, HealthCorps Coordinators and students, with the help of our partner organizations, take our upbeat message to underserved communities. HealthCorps has 15 high schools in New York City, and its NYC Highway to Health Festival is the largest of its national festivals.
HealthCorps is proud to host Highway to Health at the South Street Seaport for a third year, and is committed to the revitalization of this New York City landmark.

About HealthCorps
HealthCorps® is a 501 (c) 3 founded in 2003 by heart surgeon and Daytime Emmy Award-winning host Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa to combat the childhood obesity crisis. HealthCorps® is building a nationwide movement to shape a new generation.
HealthCorps® “Coordinators” lead unique in-school and community programming designed to foster physical and mental fitness, particularly among high-need populations. The Coordinators serve as peer-mentors who deliver a progressive curriculum in nutrition, exercise and mental strength to more than 40,000 students. For more than a decade, the HealthCorps program has inspired its participants to adopt a healthier lifestyle. HealthCorps’ 62 schools in 13 states and DC serve as “Living Labs” to explore and find solutions to the complex, underlying causes of the obesity crisis, as well as discover, communicate, implement and advocate for national and regional solutions.
In the fall of 2012, HealthCorps introduced HealthCorps University, a new “train the trainer” professional development program that makes the HealthCorps principles and curriculum available to virtually any school. Through HealthCorps University and the Coordinator program, HealthCorps hopes to have a presence in 100 schools by 2015.
