Pro-Women & LGBT funder awarded first-ever “Smashing Silos” Award for commitment to intersectional social justice in the reproductive justice movement
Press Release – Washington, DC — Today, the Groundswell Fund, the largest funder of the reproductive justice movement in the United States and the nation’s primary movement engaging women of color, low-income women, and LGBT people as grassroots activists, announced that it is one of four recipients of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) 2017 IMPACT Awards.
The 5th Anniversary of the Impact Awards honors top grantmakers committed to diversity and inclusion to empower and strengthen marginalized communities. Based in Oakland, California, Groundswell Fund works to move donor resources to those most impacted by injustice through grantmaking and capacity building at a grassroots level.
“Receiving the Smashing Silos award means the tides are turning and we couldn’t be prouder to stand with our grantees at the forefront of that groundswell,” said Groundswell Executive Director Vanessa Daniel. “The leaders and organizations we support are organizing on the front lines of every major issue we face right now. They bring the lived experience, the knowledge, the strategy and the vision our movements need to transform the systems and policies we need to change.”
Groundswell is one of the nation’s leading funders focused on efforts led by and serving women of color and transgender people of color. This past May, the Liberation Fund launched to support and expand its mission to elevate the organizing power of low-income women, women of color and transgender people to advance policy change. Since then, the Liberation Fund has:
- Secured $500K for its first set of grants
- Recruited 15 prominent advisors from across environmental, racial and economic justice, to immigrant, Native and transgender rights.
- Plans to announce its first set of grantees this Fall 2017
Awardees will be recognized at a reception on September 18, 2017, in New Orleans during the CHANGE Unity Summit.
