Company Donates Percentage of Ice Sales to Help #StrikeOutALS
FRAMINGHAM, MASS., September 16, 2014 – Cumberland Farms, leading convenience and gasoline retailer, today announced that the company’s fundraiser to #StrikeOutALS has raised $53,636 for The ALS Association from the sale of 268,182 bags of ice. During the fundraiser, which ran from August 14th through Labor Day, 20 cents from every bag of ice purchased at Cumberland Farms’ nearly 600 store locations was donated directly to the ALS Association.
“The Cumberland Farms family is grateful to have been a part of Ice Bucket Challenge and to donate proceeds from our ice sales to such a great cause,” said Ari Haseotes, CEO of Cumberland Farms. “What started as one of our employee’s challenge to the company grew into a community effort, and we hope that it has helped to raise awareness, and that our contribution will help to fund research to discover treatments and a cure for the disease.”
Originated by Massachusetts’s resident and former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, the Ice Bucket Challenge was created to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. According to The ALS Association, it has welcomed $111.1 million dollars in Ice Bucket Challenge donations as of September 8th.
“We are honored to have Cumberland Farms join The ALS Association in the fight against ALS,” said Meghan Tallakson, the Association’s Director of National Corporate Partnerships. “We’re inspired by how both the brand’s employees and its customers became a part of this grassroots phenomenon and raised more than $50,000, which will be used towards our mission to build a world free of ALS.”
