San Francisco, CA – CREDO announced today that it is donating a total of $198,693 to three nonprofit groups working to protect human rights, advance single payer health care and provide hard-hitting independent journalism in a corporate-dominated media landscape. The three groups, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Democracy Now! and the Physicians for a National Health Program were nominated by CREDO customers and chosen from among hundreds of nonprofits to be featured as the three groups eligible in the month of March to receive funding. CREDO customers then helped decide how much money each nonprofit received by simply voting online or via phone or text.
The Center for Constitutional Rights received 28 percent, which added up to $55,634 in funding. The Center for Constitutional Rights works around the world to defend human rights, whether it’s fighting the racially-biased stop-and-frisk program in New York, representing prisoners in Pelican Bay challenging long-term solitary confinement, representing the families of U.S. drone victims or holding the American instigators of LGBTI persecution in Uganda accountable.
“CREDO’s support of progressive organizations like CCR makes our cutting-edge litigation and advocacy work possible,” said Kevi Brannelly, Director of Development for the Center for Constitutional Rights.
The Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) received 39 percent, which added up to $77,490 in funding. Four years after passage of the the Affordable Care Act, it’s clearer than ever that the U.S. needs a comprehensive, single-payer national health program. PNHP is dedicated to achieving that goal, for the health and well-being of all Americans.
“PNHP is proud to partner with CREDO in working towards true, progressive health reform, single-payer ‘Medicare for all,’” said Matthew Petty, PNHP’s executive director.
Democracy Now! received 33 percent, which added up to 65,569 in funding. For democracy to work, people need easy access to independent, diverse sources of news and information. Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez and the Democracy Now! news team provide the hard-hitting, independent journalism that’s vital amid the noise of corporate mainstream media.
Every month, three progressive nonprofits will be eligible for funding through CREDO’s donations program. In just the first three months of 2014, CREDO has already donated nearly $600,000 to progressive nonprofits and will continue to fund groups throughout the year. CREDO has donated more than $76 million to organizations committed to social change since the company was founded in 1985.
