Bumbo International Reaches $10 Million Milestone in Charitable Giving for Bumbo Cares

Non-Profit Organization Assists Underprivileged and Special Needs Children in Bumbo’s Hometown of Pretoria, South Africa and Surrounding Communities

Pretoria, South Africa (September 10, 2013) – Bumbo International, manufacturer of high quality infant and toddler products, today announced it has reached a $10 million milestone in charitable contributions to Bumbo Cares, a non-profit organization founded in 2005 to assist the underprivileged and special needs children in the company’s own backyard of Pretoria, South Africa. Since the Bumbo Cares initiative began just eight years ago, more than 1,200 children, 15,000 students and tens of thousands of people in the broader community have received assistance, forever changing their lives for the better.

“People all over the world have made Bumbo a part of their little ones’ biggest moments,” said  Joe Buitendag, CEO, Bumbo International and the son of Bumbo founder, the late Johan Buitendach. “Their support has made it possible for us to offer love and support for every child in our community, and with that comes every opportunity for success.”

Bumbo donates a portion of proceeds from every Bumbo product purchased worldwide back into the Pretoria community.  Over the last eight years, the $10 million in contributions has enabled Bumbo to build the Bumbo Cares facilities and develop specialized programs that support those in the community who need help the most.  These programs include:

  • Feeding and sheltering orphans, children who may be homeless or victims of abuse, new mothers and babies, and families affected by poverty or difficult circumstances.  The Jonibach Child and Youth Care Center provides temporary housing, while the Bumbo Cares Community Kitchen prepares more than 400 nutrient-rich meals daily.
  • Giving troubled children an outlet for building confidence and self-esteem in their state-of-the-art Jonibach Sports Center.  Children from the Sports Center have gone on to compete and reach achievement in local, regional and national athletic tournaments.
  • Offering one of the few daycare facilities in the area for parents of children with special needs.  The Centurion Center serves as both a daycare and full-time school program offering a unique learning environment for children who have Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other life changing conditions.
  • Providing facilities and lending support to local schools and charities.
  • Donating Bumbo products to daycare centers, orphanages and kindergartens in the community.

“My late father, Johan Buitendach, started Bumbo Cares and was very passionate about taking care of the children in our community,” added Joe.  “As we celebrate this $10 million milestone, we at Bumbo are honored to continue his mission.  But, there is still more work to be done.”
