Amida Care Brings Therapeutic Art Workshop, “The Beauty of Art Within You,” to Brooklyn
Press Release – New York, NY (June 2, 2016) — With support from Brooklyn Council Member Robert Cornegy, Jr., New York nonprofit community health plan Amida Care presented “The Beauty of Art Within You,” a free “Live Your Life” community wellness event, at Restoration Plaza in Brooklyn yesterday. By exploring the healing power of art, this interactive art workshop taught Brooklynites creative ways to improve their health and have fun in the process. An art instructor helped to guide participants in creating their own pieces of art, using art as a therapeutic tool to improve mental and emotional well-being. Participants used stencils of a mandala symbol to paint images representing what is most important to them.
“Amida Care’s Live Your Life program grew out of direct member feedback that health care needs to be about more than visiting the doctor and taking pills. These events are designed to meet the social, physical, and emotional needs of our members and build life skills. We thank Council Member Cornegy for his support in opening up this program to the Brooklyn community,” said Doug Wirth, President and CEO of Amida Care.
“On behalf of Council Member Cornegy, it is a pleasure to meet you all face to face and see your artwork. We are proud to support programs like Amida Care’s that are meaningful to our community,” said Stefani Zinerman, Chief of Staff to Council Member Cornegy, who provided funds for the event.
Amida Care holds monthly “Live Your Life” wellness events throughout the five boroughs of New York City, where members and their guests learn about ways to get and stay healthy physically, mentally, and spiritually. In addition to art classes, the events cover such topics as healthy cooking, yoga, meditation, African dance, Latin dance, aromatherapy, and more. Amida Care also hosts an annual artwork competition for its members; winning entries are included in the Amida Care wall calendar.
