Shatterproof, a national organization committed to protecting our children from addiction to alcohol or other drugs and ending the stigma and suffering of those affected by this disease, is staging 28 Shatterproof Challenge rappelling events across the country to draw attention to the national epidemic of drug and alcohol addiction. This is the first time in history that there has been such a coordinated program to end the shame and stigma associated with this disease. Shatterproof is doubling the amount of events since 2014, with hopes that 3,000 will participate and 5 million will be raised to support Shatterproof’s efforts. Registration is available at www.ShatterproofChallenge.org.

The first 2015 Shatterproof Challenge kicks off in Miami on April 2nd with events continuing all around the country thru early November. Some Shatterproof Challenge Rappelling cities include; Washington, D.C., Dallas, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Seattle, Milwaukee and many more all across the U.S. For a complete list of cities please visit the website.

Anyone over the age of 18 (or under 18 with parent or guardian permission) can register to participate in a Shatterproof Challenge Rappelling Series event. No previous training is necessary. Typically 80-100 individuals participate per event. Additionally, each event has local sponsors (corporate and media), a landing pad party with food and music, and most importantly raises vital funds to prevent and treat addiction and raise awareness and breakdown stigma about the disease. The funds also support key addiction policy initiatives at the federal and state levels and educate Americans through events, public service announcements and digital and social media.

ABOUT SHATTERPROOF

In 2012, Gary Mendell, a member of the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, founded Shatterproof to educate, empower and equip families, educators, health care providers, legislators and others to proactively address addiction among children and young adults. Mendell and his team have built a national organization to bridge serious gaps in funding and resources for the disease of addiction. His son, Brian Mendell, lost his battle with addiction at the age of 25 in 2011.

ADDICTION: ONE OF THE NATION’S LEADING HEALTH PROBLEMS

Every four minutes someone dies from addiction to alcohol or other drugs. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 20 million Americans age 12 or older use illegal drugs each month. In the U.S. alone, over 135,000 people die from alcohol or other drugs every year.
