In the World’s Largest Closet, Philanthropist Theresa Roemer Raises Funds to Sponsor Camper, Kaela Cruz to Attend MoRE Camp Adventure by Kids Need More, an Oncology Camp on Shelter Island, New York

HOUSTON, TEXAS, January 2015 – Houston philanthropist Theresa Roemer recently hosted the first charity event in her 3,000 sq. ft. closet since the infamous burglary that took place there this past July, 2014. Prior to the burglary, Theresa Roemer’s elegant three-story closet, designed after a Neiman Marcus showroom, made national headlines for its opulence and character when the closet was featured on the Neiman Marcus blog and the story went viral.

A private, invitation-only fundraiser took place in November to benefit MoRE Camp Adventure, an oncology camp run by Kids Need More. Through silent auction items and raffles, the event raised funds to send deserving camper, Kaela Cruz to camp in the summer of 2015. The sponsorship will cover Kaela’s costs including transportation to and from camp, room and board, all meals and snacks, camp shirts, camp hoodies, and entertainment for the entire week.

Now twelve years old, Kaela was diagnosed with bone cancer the day before her 5th birthday January 2007. She had an above knee amputation on her left leg in May 2007 to save her life. She has been Cancer free for more than seven years, and an inspiration to us all. Kaela has told her story of survivorship to a few foundations to raise funds while spreading awareness of pediatric cancer and children with disabilities. She also participated in several 5k Run/Walks, the most recent event she attended was Curefest 2014 for childhood cancer at the Mall in Washington DC.

“Houston really showed up for this event. I was so excited to see so many people show up to support this great cause,” says Roemer. This camp is completely run by volunteers and fully funded by donations – that’s no small order. I am thrilled that the November fundraiser was a success and will assist Kaela in making memories next year at MoRE Camp Adventure.”

The Kids Need More community gives children like Kaela, their siblings and families the hope that despite a life threatening illness or loss of a limb, you can have fun, build friendships and just be a kid.
