NEW YORK, NY (Apr. 22, 2015) — The Knight-VICE Innovators Fund is now open for applications from journalists and others seeking to adopt new ways of storytelling for the next generation of news consumers. VICE Media and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced an investment of $500,000 in the new initiative in collaboration with City University of New York’s CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in December with the aim of propelling innovation and experimentation in journalism.

Today, the application is live at http://bit.ly/1DuYSEP.

Awardees will be able to leverage the best-in-class production and storytelling ability of VICE News along with the vast resources of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism to support the development and and distribution of their work. Finalists will spend three days a week with VICE News staff and two days at the CUNY J-School for up to three months.

Projects may encompass a range of journalism tools from investigative techniques to new presentations styles or ways of telling stories. Above all, the Fund is looking for applicants who have specific projects that have the potential to create a substantial impact to serve a global, connected audience.

“This is an amazing opportunity for journalists from all over the world to get uniquely trained, both at VICE and at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. I can’t wait to start reviewing the applications,” said Sarah Bartlett, dean of the CUNY Journalism School.

“Providing new avenues for journalists and others to engage people around news and pressing issues that affect communities around the world is essential to pushing the field forward,” said Jennifer Preston, Knight Foundation vice president for journalism. “The Knight-VICE Innovators Fund was developed with this in mind—it will serve as a path for news providers to take advantage of new storytelling tools in the digital age, update their skills, and ensure that innovation in reporting is the norm.”

Finalists will be determined by a select group of judges from each of the three organizations.

The deadline for applications is June 1st.
