MTV News’ Sway Calloway to join in celebration of the growing impact of the All Stars’ Development School for Youth on the lives of inner-city youth
NEW YORK, NY, NOVEMBER 30, 2015: Join Sway Calloway, rapper, reporter, executive producer for MTV News and co-host of the nationally syndicated radio show “The Wake Up Show,” among an audience of business and entertainment luminaries on December 2 at 12:00pm at the New York Hilton. The occasion? The All Stars Project’s “Learning from Leaders” benefit luncheon, shining the spotlight on two key leaders in the expansion of the non-profit organization’s Development School for Youth (DSY). Amy Doyle, EVP of Viacom’s VH1 and Logo, and Kevin Kelley, CEO of Ironshore, Inc. will both be honored for their leadership of this life-changing program for inner-city young people – which has doubled in size across the country over the past year.
“The DSY’s afterschool development model connects inner-city youth with corporate America, enabling the youth to create new relationships and new possibilities for themselves,” said Gabrielle Kurlander, CEO, All Stars Project, Inc. “For corporate participants, this program is the embodiment of ‘involvement philanthropy.’ This growing trend has captured the energies of corporate professionals, who are not only writing checks, but also becoming personally involved in transforming the lives of inner-city youth. The Joseph A. Forgione Development School for Youth (DSY) is a core program of the national nonprofit All Stars Project, Inc., which reaches 20,000 inner-city youth nationwide each year with a range of free, performance-based afterschool development programs. Thanks to its corporate partners, the DSY is proud to have placed 125 graduates in NYC, and 382 young people across six cities, in paid summer internships this year. Today, 180 companies across America are participating in involvement philanthropy through the DSY, including 90 new corporate partners this year alone. Involvement philanthropy is catching on and spreading!
Seeing and acting on new possibilities is development, and it’s what All Stars is all about – Afterschool Development as a new way of engaging poverty by exposing youth to people, places and things beyond what they experience in ordinary life. DSY is an excellent example; inner-city young people learn to perform as professionals. They partner with business leaders from top companies who conduct workshops and provide training in leadership and business, including resume-writing, networking, public speaking and dressing professionally. The DSY’s corporate partners then offer the DSY graduates six-week paid summer internships that prepare them to enter the workforce, pursue educational opportunities and face life challenges in new ways.
