San Francisco’s Battery Powered Builds A New Model of Philanthropy to Tackle Extreme Poverty Worldwide in Next 15 Years

How to use philanthropic investments effectively as a driving force for positive change is at the heart of a new short film designed to seek out and inspire individuals in the Bay Area and beyond to do their part to end extreme poverty in this lifetime

For it’s latest theme, Battery Powered has aligned itself with UN goals to bring global extreme poverty rates to zero by 2030, giving $1.3 million to organizations with leading poverty alleviation solutions

San Francisco CA, June 24 – Members of Battery Powered, the philanthropic program of The Battery SF, joined together to explore what it will take to end worldwide extreme poverty over the next 15 years. Battery Powered galvanized this commitment in light of the 70th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter and the commemorative events happening in San Francisco on June 26th. The UN has targeted 2030 as the date for the eradication of extreme poverty.

As part of their efforts in this giving theme, Battery Powered has released a short documentary, Ending Extreme Poverty, the latest installment in the Battery Powered Views film series. The film can be seen HERE.

Ending Extreme Poverty highlights the ways everyone can contribute to a world free from global poverty, taking a cue from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who is quoted in the film saying, “We are the first generation that can end poverty. We are in this together. Let’s make 2015 a time for global action.”

The Battery Powered Views series is designed as a tool to seek out and inspire individuals—both new and experienced in philanthropy—and join them with the 350 others already in the Battery Powered fold. In June to further its commitment ending extreme poverty, the Battery Powered membership gave an unprecedented $1.3 million to leading organizations working to end extreme poverty by 2030.

“The goal here,” says Abbey Banks of Amplifier Strategies, the agency that designed the giving program, “is to bring a group of committed people together to learn about a range of issues, discover what inspires them, and explore new ways of giving back that will make their philanthropic dollars go farther. Big or small, every commitment is amplified through the support of the rest of the membership and the community.”

The model of philanthropy at Battery Powered is a much more robust version of a traditional giving circle. “The Bay Area thrives on innovation, and Battery Powered provides a structure for more people to work together to back solutions that address today’s biggest challenges, such as extreme poverty,” says Banks. “Battery Powered allows people to grow their philanthropic muscle and use strategic investments as a force for creating positive change. We call it activating generosity.”

Among the most salient points the affecting but hopeful film makes is that women are the shock absorbers for extreme poverty all around the world, yet, at the same time, women are the true agents of change in their own lives and communities.
