The NVLD Project Debuts; Non-Profit Dedicated to Non-Verbal Learning Disability; Helping Children and Adults With Social and Spatial Difficulties

Launches New Robust Website; Conducting Innovative Research with Columbia University and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles

NEW YORK (March 22, 2016) – The NVLD Project, a non-profit dedicated to validating Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD), has announced its official public introduction with the unveiling of its new robust website – nvld.org – at a special launch event in New York. The March 15 reception was held at The Harmonie Club and attended by a group of more than 200 supporters, donors and leading experts in child development and learning disabilities.

The NVLD Project works to provide assistance to children, adolescents and adults who struggle with NVLD. The new website serves as one of the leading resources in the nation for NVLD and features an abundance of expert content to help parents, educators, researchers, clinicians and scientists.

According to The NVLD Project, people with Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD) struggle with a range of conditions, particularly social and spatial disabilities. Often they are marginalized and isolated and can experience social barriers throughout their lives.

“The NVLD Project was inspired by my daughter who was diagnosed with having a non-verbal learning disability at the age of five,” said Laura Lemle, PhD, Founder of The NVLD Project. “NVLD is a very complicated and poorly understood disability and too many people are marginalized in life as a result. I am so pleased to have the opportunity through our organization and new website to create a special home and supportive community that I hope will help others and change lives.”

The NVLD Project’s Work

The NVLD Project works to raise awareness, build support and create helpful solutions for children, adolescents and adults with Non-Verbal Learning Disability. Following are several of the organization’s key programs and initiatives:

  • Validation for NVLD as a Distinct Diagnosis – The NVLD Project is partnering with leading experts at Columbia University Medical Center’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to secure an official diagnosis of NVLD as a valid disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Without it, NVLD has no “diagnostic home” and access to psychological treatment, educational interventions, reimbursements and accommodations might be blocked.
  • Innovative Research with Leading Institutions – The NVLD Project is conducting evidenced-based research with several leading institutions and experts, including Columbia University and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. This includes epidemiologic, neuroimaging and MRI studies.
  • Educational Workshops – The NVLD Project and its expert advisors conduct special workshops to help train educators to better understand NVLD and students who struggle with the disability. Currently, The NVLD Project is conducting workshops at Ethical Culture Fieldston School, Brooklyn Heights Montessori School in New York, Mary McDowell Friends School and School-Based Mental Health and School-Based Health Centers at Columbia University Medical Center.

Its primary purpose is to provide a supportive community for children, adolescents and adults who struggle with NVLD while serving as a leading and expert resource for parents, educators, researchers, scientists and clinicians.

Nvld.org provides a comprehensive and robust resource for the most important issues surrounding NVLD. Key features of the new website include:
