Press Release – ATLANTA (Feb. 13, 2017) — The global humanitarian organization CARE today announced “Walk In Her Shoes,” a weeklong solidarity and fundraising campaign in support of women and girls struggling to lift themselves out of poverty around the world.

Starting on International Women’s Day (March 8th), participants will trek 10,000 steps daily, challenging themselves to think about what it’s like to truly Walk In Her Shoes and soliciting donations along the way, so women and girls can gain greater access to quality education, financial services and nutritious food. The community of people who join the effort can walk individually or as a team.

The walk represents the daily journey of women and girls in the world’s poorest countries, many of whom trudge miles each day to attend school, fetch water or bring goods to and from the market.

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook chief operating officer and author of the bestselling book “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead,” is honorary chair of Walk In Her Shoes.

“I’m excited to serve in support of such an important cause,” said Sandberg. “Walk In Her Shoes brings to life the challenges that women and girls face each day while moving us closer, step by step, to a future where they can realize their full potential and live out their dreams.”

Michelle Nunn, CARE’s president and chief executive officer said: “We will walk in solidarity with women and girls worldwide and march toward a more just future in which they can access a quality education, loans to start businesses, nutritious food and more.”

Sandberg and Nunn will host a Facebook Live video discussion on Feb. 14 at 5 pm ET on CARE’s Facebook page. The two will discuss the importance of the fight for gender equality and women’s economic empowerment. Facebook employees are also planning to participate in a day-long Walk In Her Shoes event at the company’s Menlo Park, Calif, headquarters next month.
