Pimsleur® Language Programs Offers Free Tagalog Language Course To Aid Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Relief And Recovery Efforts

NEW YORK, Nov. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Simon & Schuster’s Pimsleur® Language Programs announced today that it is offering free downloads of 15 lessons of its Tagalog language program to support aid agencies and volunteers helping the millions affected by the devastating Typhoon Haiyan which tore through the Philippines two weeks ago.

Pimsleur, a leading publisher of foreign-language learning programs, has made the courses available free of charge on its website Pimsleur.com at www.pimsleur.com/relief, and has authorized their digital resellers, including iTunes and Pimsleurdigital.com, to provide the Tagalog downloads free through the end of the year.

By providing aid workers with a way to communicate with victims, Pimsleur hopes to ease relief and recovery efforts in communities affected by the crisis. While Tagalog is not the primary dialect in the areas most severely hit, it is one that is generally understood, and will be more comprehensible to more people than English will. The ability to communicate will be especially crucial in more remote and rural areas where English is not widely spoken and where widespread damage has occurred.

“In the aftermath of a disaster like Typhoon Haiyan, the ability to speak to victims is critical.  With our programs, volunteers will be able to speak basic phrases almost immediately,” said Robert Riger, Vice President & Director of Pimsleur Language Programs. “Our thoughts go out to those impacted by this disaster, and we’re eager to help in the relief effort.”

Pimsleur has donated to relief efforts in the past, providing free course downloads after both the Japanese tsunami in 2011, and the Haitian earthquake in 2010. The company’s Haitian Creole course was downloaded free of charge over 6,000 times by individuals and organizations supporting relief efforts in Haiti.

In partnership with the USO and The Boston Foundation, Pimsleur has also distributed more than 22,600 free Pashto or Dari courses to U.S. troops deployed in Afghanistan through its, “Free Afghan Languages” program.

This year, Pimsleur is celebrating its 50th anniversary by launching the Pimsleur Course Manager App and publishing a hardcover edition of Dr. Paul Pimsleur’s classic How to Learn a Foreign Language. Pimsleur offers audio-based language learning programs in 50 languages available on CD, MP3 and as software.

About Pimsleur

Pimsleur® is an audio-based language-learning program that follows the Pimsleur Method™ developed by Dr. Paul Pimsleur 50 years ago. The Pimsleur Method teaches foreign languages the same way you learned your first language as a child, acquiring the vocabulary of the new language, along with the melody, rhythm, and intonation as used in everyday conversation. Pimsleur offers audio-based language learning programs in 50 languages, ranging from Albanian to Vietnamese.  Part of Simon & Schuster Audio, a division of CBS, Pimsleur has its Editorial and Production group based in Concord, Mass. with management in New York City.

Milford, N.H. November 14, 2013 – For the sixth year, Barbour is partnering with One Warm Coat to host its annual coat drive to benefit the communities surrounding Barbour’s retail locations. NEW YORK, NY (November 19, 2013) – On Tuesday December 3, New York residents, businesses and charities are encouraged to take part in a global movement, #GivingTuesday, a national day for giving following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and CyberMonday that serves as the kick-off to the holiday giving season and uses the power of social media to change the way people think about giving, while encouraging people to support the causes they care about.

To help New Yorkers do their part on #GivingTuesday, the 92nd street Y and Mommy Nearest, the local resource for mobile parents, have collaborated to launch a clothing and toy drive with drop off locations at 92Y and at all giggle locations in Manhattan.

Importantly, to recognize the generosity of those who donate;

  • Mommy Nearest will setup a free Holiday 2013 photo “motorbooth” outside of 92Y.  Families can step inside the mobile photo booth to take memorable holiday photos with a seasonal backdrop and fun props.   Parents can use the photos for their 2013 Holiday cards, checking an item off their to-do list while giving back.
  • For each item donated, children will be given “Giving Stickers” to be placed on a giving therMOMeter.  For every donation made, Mommy Nearest will match the donation by giving $1 to one of the day’s charities.  Throughout the day, collections will be tracked and shared across social media.
  • Individual participants will also be encouraged to share their donations across social media by taking an #UNselfie with Mommy Nearest Brand Ambassadors.

To find drop-off locations in New York City and to follow along on this wonderful day of giving, visit: www.mommynearest.com/givingtuesday

“#GivingTuesday can have a significant impact on the lives of fellow New Yorkers if we can encourage participation on the individual level,” said Joshua Milstein, CEO, Mommy Nearest.  “We’ve seen amazing things from communities that come together and we hope to inspire others to share their own stories of giving.  Social sharing has, and always will be, a key element to the success of #GivingTuesday.”

WORLD DESIGN IMAPCT PRIZE 2013-2014 SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED

Montreal (Canada) 20 November 2013 – At its 28th General Assembly held on 18-19 November in Montreal (Canada), the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) announced the seven projects shortlisted for the World Design Impact Prize 2013-2014 cycle.

In alphabetical order, the shortlisted projects are:

  • ABC (A Behaviour Changing) Syringe
  • BioLite HomeStove
  • Family By Family
  • Laddoo Project
  • Leveraged Freedom Chair
  • Potty Project
  • Refugee Housing Unit

The World Design Impact Prize is an award programme that recognises excellence and diverse ways of addressing societal challenges. It leverages Icsid’s vast global membership network to champion possible solutions to global issues like poverty and the effects of industrialisation and consumerism on sustainability and society. “Now in its second iteration, it is bringing attention to some great projects that are promoting an expanded definition of industrial design and that have an enormous potential to address issues of societal significance,” stated Dr. Brandon Gien, Icsid President. “The worlds growing economies are looking for solutions in many areas and the submissions for the World Design Impact Prize can meet these needs.”

An extensive assessment of the projects was overseen by an international review panel that selected the seven projects because of the opportunity they create in recognition of the value of industrial design but more importantly on social wellbeing. These projects are reimagining distribution systems and the role of the designer, as well as are pushing the boundary of what creating an artefact means. Projects such as Family by Family, the Ladoo Project and the Potty Project are creating large impact by being systems based and infrastructure light while ABC Syringe, BioLite HomeStove, the Leveraged Freedom Chair and the Refugee Housing Unit are reimagining how products serving marginalised and at-risk communities can better address the challenges they are attempting to address.

Commenting on the shortlisted nominations, Icsid Senator and Chair of the Review Panel, Dr. Mark Breitenberg said, “We are looking for design that is innovative, that is breaking new ground in the field, that leads to progress, and advances the profession of design. We are looking for the project that has the greatest impact and is thinking about design as a way to solve problems. We want the winner of the prize to plant a seed, and showcase a lot of the extraordinary work that is being done in humanitarian design around the world.”

The finalists will be announced on 24 January 2014 and the award will be presented at the World Design Capital® (WDC) International Design Gala in Cape Town (South Africa) in February 2014.

Pakems Donates Shoes to Denver’s Homeless

Colorado Shoe Company Gives 700 pairs to Denver Rescue Mission

Denver, CO (November 20, 2013) – Today at 10:00 am Pakems, a Colorado-based footwear company, is donating 700 pairs of its lightweight, water-resistant and warm shoes to the Denver Rescue Mission for distribution to area individuals and families in need. Pakems, created by Colorado businesswoman, Julie Adams, are lightweight, packable shoes, designed for men and women on the go.

“We take our role in our community very seriously,” says Pakems founder Julie Adams.  “We have been extraordinarily fortunate, but we also know that there are many men, women and children here who struggle.  We’re happy to donate some of our shoes, knowing that they’ll be going to people who need them.”

The Denver Rescue Mission is the Rocky Mountain area’s oldest Christian charity, offering a growing range of services for people in need since 1892.  According to Adams, “It’s impossible not to support the longstanding work of the Denver Rescue Mission, especially this time of year. It’s our way of giving thanks to them for what they do.”

Shipping coordinator, Marcy Schroedel, reached out to UPS and asked that a truck and driver be donated for the move. “UPS immediately agreed and saw it as a way to give back. I was shocked at how willing a large company jumped at the chance to help,” Schroedel said.

Pakems are engineered to be lightweight and packable so they can easily be taken anywhere. Every pair are sold with a matching bag that can be worn over the shoulder like a small messenger bag. These shoes are fast becoming the before-and-after shoe for winter activities and just a great shoe to wear around the city when the weather turns colder.

This winter they will help the men and women of the Denver Rescue Mission stay a little bit dryer.
